How to position yourself to get recruited

In today's fast-paced & complex workplace, having the right skills & experience isn't always enough to secure you the job, you must know how to market & position yourself effectively to get hired.

I will share a few insights using the 4 Ps of Job Search I curated.

1. You're the PRODUCT – what is your competitive advantage? What are the features (knowledge, skills, strengths, traits & abilities) that make you different & stand out among competing job seekers to prospective employers?

Good grades alone don't cut it again; you need more than that to stand out. It could be your work/leadership experience, professional qualification, specialist training.

2. How are you PACKAGING - this refers to how you present yourself & your credentials. We present ourselves in 3 ways - in person (your physical appearance & communication), online (your social brand & perception), and on documents (cover letter & CV).

Invest in your social presence & sell your story, dress-act-speak-look the part & having a compelling cover letter & CV that serve as your marketing brochure.

Having a great competitive advantage is not enough to get the job you truly desire; you need to package yourself to employers properly.

3. PROSPECT - consider creating a targeted list of companies where you want to apply for jobs. Understand the inside out of your potential employers. Do as much research as possible to help identify the organization & the skills, training, personality, and knowledge they value highly.

Understand which key phrases and buzz words are particularly sought-after by potential employers in your desired industry.

4. PRESENT – You as the product & package - what are your distribution channels to desired employers? They could include applying for Job Postings, Cold Calling & Networking with preferred employers.

Networking is still one of the most excellent ways to presenting & positioning yourself. Network with current & former colleagues/schoolmates at professional meetings, recruiters, fellow job seekers, etc. WE ARE ALL ONE PERSON AWAY FROM THAT OPPORTUNITY WE SO DESIRE.

5. PERSPECTIVE - it's not just about what you want, also know what employers want! Most of us know what we are looking for in a job/organization but rarely understand what prospective employers want.

It's essential to see things from their point of view & take advantage.
